Respite Options

Information and Advice

Commonwealth Carelink Centres have details on local respite services and options.
There are over 60 Commonwealth Carelink Centres around Australia, three of which are in Tasmania.

Carer Respite Centres organise and manage the delivery of tailored respite care packages.
They are funded under the Federal Government's National Respite for Carer Programme (NRCP) which aims to support carers by facilitating their access to respite care, information and other forms of support or assistance, according to the needs and preferences of the carer.

Carer Resource Centres and Carer Associations offer information and support to carers.

Community Based Respite Options

Day Care Centres offer social activities and support for older people and people with disabilities, and respite time for carers.

Regular, short term support offered in a person's own home (or in the community) to allow a carer 'time out'.

Short term additional support offered to assist Home and Community Care (HACC) clients and carers in times of emergency. (An "Emergency" might include circumstances such as when a frail elderly person becomes ill and needs extra support; or when a carer requests assistance due to stress).

Volunteer families provide respite for up to 48 hours per month, with clients joining normal family activities. Family based respite care aims to allow new friendships to develop and new experiences to be shared.

Residential Respite

Assessment for admission into Residential Respite is conducted by Aged Care Assessment Teams.

Residential respite is short-term care provided in a residential aged care facility (formerly known as "Nursing Homes" and "Hostels").
This form of respite is for people who usually live at home with support but who temporarily need a higher level of care.
